HELMETS: In the past few years I have owned about a dozen helmets, including Arai, Shoei and Nolan. I have also road tested several other brands including Schuberth, BMW System, AFX, Lazer and Roof. I had to pass up on testing more brands, since not all fit my head comfortably. Below is not merely a list of random helmets, it is a selection of 4 exceptional products. Generally speaking, for short rides of an hour or so, it makes little difference what type of full-face helmet you are wearing, as long as the helmet fits and it is safe. But if you really want to tell helmets apart wear them on long trips. Within 3 hours of riding the qualities and shortcomings of any helmet become obvious. The old saying "you get what you pay for" applies here. In my experience there is a great deal of advantage in wearing high-end helmets. They tend to be a lot more comfortable, with most of the kinks worked out. But occasionally there is a less expensive brand that will shine as well. The KBC represents the choice for those seeking value in a quiet and beautifully styled helmet. SHOEI X-ELEVEN, is their most advanced, race-ready helmet to date, costing over $550. For those with a "SHOEI head," there may not be a better choice. ARAI QUANTUM-II is the latest generation of their very popular model. It is the most comfortable helmet around. Since using this new Arai, I have become quite attached to it. Finally, what many consider the ultimate helmet in the world ARAI RX-7 CORSAIR. Read my review to find out if this truly the ultimate...

ARAI, RX-7 CORSAIR
Although Arai's are typically known as the best helmets in the world, this is the helmet that has the privilege to be the best Aria. Many of the features are similar to the Quantum that is mentioned on the right. However, the Corsair is universally known as the ultimate helmet by many and it draws respect. I love wearing mine, specially because it's lighter than the Quantum. However, I found the Corsair to be a bit noisier than the Quantum.

Arai is the only helmet company that provides 3 distinct models for 3 different head shapes. Kudos to Arai for caring. Quantum series is made for people with Round-Oval heads, Profile for Long-Oval and if that wasn't enough, there is now Vector for those with in-between head shapes.

PLUS:
1- Custom-fit comfort right out of the box.
2- Removable and very plush liner.
3- Very good ventilation system.
4- The shield locks closed.
5- Draws respect, as the ultimate lid.
6- Lighter than the Quantum.
7- Too many champions wear Arai to mention here.

ISSUES:
1- Arai's shield removal system is antiquated.
2- The Corsair is a bit noisier than the Quantum.

Verdict: This is a fantastic helmet, with many positive qualities. It's a bit noisy however. I personally love the styling of the Corsair. For more info try Arai's web site at araiamericas.com.

ARAI, QUANTUM-II
Arai recently released the newly redesigned model of their best selling helmet, the Quantum series. There are nine major upgrades to the last generation of Quantum.
Outside, the new Quantum-II has Arai's SCLC (SUPER COMPLEX LAMINATE CONSTRUCTION) SHELL, the same special lightweight shell formerly reserved for the RX-7 racing series, plus Arai's latest "organic" shell shape, designed to be both more natural looking and to enhance the helmet's ability to cut through the wind more cleanly, thereby reducing buffeting and making it more "still" in turbulence than previous models. The intake and exhaust vents are recessed into the shell to improve airflow, reduce wind noise, and give the helmet a cleaner look. Inside, the new Quantum-II's main feature is its washable, fully removable liner. It also has a redesigned comfort liner.

Overall the new Quantum seems to have corrected the less than ideal issues with their previous generation helmets. The non-recessed vents were a problem before, the non-removable liner, reduced the longevity of the helmet. Specially for those of us who love to ride all summer long.

Arai is the only helmet company that provides 3 distinct models for 3 different head shapes. Kudos to Arai for caring. Quantum series is made for people with Round-Oval heads, Profile for Long-Oval and if that wasn't enough, there is now Vector for those with in-between head shapes.

This new Quantum-II is the best and most comfortable helmet I have ever used period. It is hassle-free and is custom comfortable right out of the box. Looks great, feels plush, has plenty of ventilation with a locking shield. As stated above I have become quite attached to this helmet. Bravo Arai.

PLUS:
1- Custom-fit comfort right out of the box.
2- Removable and very plush liner.
3- Excellent ventilation system.
4- Nicely Quiet.
5- The shield locks closed.
6- Worth every penny.

7- Too many champions wear Arai to mention here.

ISSUES:
1- The only issue is the old story, Arai's shield removal system is antiquated.

Verdict: The best helmet I have ever used period. Worth every dime. For more info try Arai's web site at araiamericas.com.

SHOEI, X-ELEVEN
"You get what you pay for." The comfortable, solid, no-nonsense feel of a high-end helmet is near impossible to match in discount models. This wind tunnel tested, aerodynamically precise helmet represents the latest technology from Shoei.
This top of the line model offers Hyper Dual-liner II ventilation system with internal channels and exhaust ports throughout the helmet. The entire interior lining (cheek pads, upper liner and chin strap covers) is removable for cleaning. It incorporates an anti-fog system and Quick-Release Base Plate allows tool-less shield removal. Scratch-resistant coating. DOT and Snell approved.

This Shoei has been my helmet of choice for the past several months. I have used it in warm and cold, dry and wet weather. Here are my thoughts:

PLUS:
1- The ventilation unlike many other brands is "set and forget." If set to "open" or "close" it will simply remain in that position no matter how often you handle this helmet.
2- Best shield removal system in the industry.
3- Wind tunnel testing does have its advantages. During spirited riding the helmet almost disappears on your head, with little buffeting.
4- The rear wing, although functional, adds a hi-tech, sexy look to the helmet.

5- Eric Bostrom wears Shoei.

ISSUES:
1- The liner although well made could be more plush.
2- Helmet seemed to run a little tight. I am size XL (61CM), in almost all brands including past Shoei's, but on this model XL required break-in time. Make sure to try an actual X-Eleven for size before purchasing.

Verdict: Solid! Those with a Shoei head (long Oval), may want to treat themselves to one of the hottest new helmets on the planet.

KBC, RACER-1
The RACER-1 helmet by KBC offers perhaps the best value in the US today. Why bother with a discount helmet? When KBC decided to create their ultimate helmet, they looked for inspiration from top racing helmets in the industry selling for $500+. RACER-1 helmet can be found on the 'net for under $215. It features an advanced composite core using fiberglass, kevlar, carbon, and spectra materials. The Racer-1 is very comfortable. The interior is a unique blend mixture of highly absorbent materials which KBC calls AIRLUX, coolmax, and alcantara fabric mix. Featuring AIRNET gauze sections, developed by KBC to absorb and wick away moisture providing a more comfortable interior climate. The lining is fully removable and washable. It is Snell, Dot and EU approved.

Having used this helmet for a few months and a couple of thousand miles, it feels like a good time to offer an evaluative review. I wore this helmet on a 3-day, 1000-mile trip to Canada. On the way home, it was shielding my head for almost 8 hours continuously. Here are my thoughts:

PLUS:
1- The KBC RACER-1 helmet is by far the quietest helmet I have ever used. It is even quieter than my Arai Signet GT and Shoei helmets.
2- The visor uses a 5 position ratchet system with a definite feel.
3- The removable-washable interior is plush, and equals that of more expensive helmets.
4- The vents work quite well. This helmet is especially suitable for warm weather riding, as it breathes and ventilates beautifully.
5- Its tasteful styling received praise on many occasions.
6- Mat Mladin wears KBC.

ISSUES:
1- The removable liner could use more mounting points specially around the forehead area. If not careful, the liner could bunch up when trying it on.
2- Although quiet, the sense of speed is exaggerated when wearing this helmet. For example, on high-end helmets, riding in the triple digits inspires confidence. With RACER-1, 80 MPH feels almost too fast. This one is hard to explain, as it relies purely on "feel," but having used various helmets on many spirited rides, the difference was obvious. For those who do not plan to use this helmet on the track or generally tend to ride within the limit, this issue should not be a factor.
3- The visor does not have a locking option.
4- The liner can be thicker and more comfortable.

Verdict: Possibly the best value in helmets. A solid color KBC RACER-1 can be found for under $215 online.
