TIRES: There has never been a perfect set, when it comes to tires. Until now! We all want super sticky tires that are great in the wet, highly stable in the straights and very long lasting. In real life, only one tire can provide that, even though today's sport-touring versions come pretty close to this utopian concept. For real world riding, race ready tires are simply not practical. If you ride in most road and weather conditions a supersport tire will leave you feeling less than inspired. However, for most sunny Sunday riders, and those who prefer to let it rip on the track, putting on super stickies would make a lot of sense. Below is an evaluation of three very competent sport-touring tires, with one very clear winner, the Metzeler Z6.

METZELER, ROADTEC Z6
We're not worthy! These are that great! Z6 provides outstanding performance in all weather conditions.
Metzeler offers this tire in 2 models for bikes under and over 500 lbs. Make sure to order the set for the heavier bikes. Right fitment also for modern big Enduro bikes such as the R1200GS and the GS-Adv, with specific contour design for extended mileage and confidence-inspiring riding feeling also in loaded conditions. Excellent wet performance with solid contact feeling for outstanding traction and easy handling characteristics. "Fine Carbon Matrix" compound: best dry grip engineered. This tire is also excellent for K1200S, K1200R, K1200R-Sport and the new K1200GT.

PLUS:
1- Confidence inspiring for serious riders, who prefer to ride in the real world.
2- It handles bumps, sand, gravel, tar snakes with ease. It won't let you down.
3- The plushest and smoothest ride yet.
4- Excellent cornering tires. They will perform great on sport bikes too.

3- Highly competent in the wet. The best I've ridden to date.
4- The longest lasting set of tires I've tried to date on my own K1200RS. I got an unheard of 10,000 miles on my first set.
5- We are not worthy! The best set of tires yet!

ISSUES:
1- None that I have experienced in (so far on 2 sets) 12,000 miles of riding in all kinds of roads and weather conditions.

Verdict: Solid! The best yet. They last, they corner, they handle rain, they are plush and grip like hell.

DUNLOP, D220
The D220 is developed with intensive engineering and testing, the tread pattern yields even greater grip in wet weather conditions than the D205. This tire is as close to perfect as it gets with one rather serious drawback: it doesn't last long enough. It is a solid performer on the straights, cuts corners wonderfully, handles real world roads with bumps, sand, gravel, tar snakes and such with ease. Very competent in the rain. But on my K12RS, it only lasts for 4000 miles. That is not acceptable. I went through two pairs of these babies in exactly 8K miles. Dunlop's previous generation sport-touring D205 would last 5K+ miles.

PLUS:
1- Confidence inspiring for serious riders, who prefer to ride in the real world.
2- It handles bumps, sand, gravel, tar snakes with ease. It won't let you down.
3- Competent in the wet.

ISSUES:
1- Needs to be replaced too often for serious riding. Two pairs of D220s, each only lasted 4000 miles on my K12RS.
2- Corners a bit slow, but that is expected from ST tires.

Verdict: Solid! Simply one of the best. Note to Dunlop, add another 1000-1500 miles in mileage and you've got a serious champion supersport-touring tire.

AVON, AZARO 45/46
These replacements for Azaro 35/36 are designed to put Avon on the map. After an extensive R&D period, featuring the deepest amount of center area compound, they maybe the most serious contender to appear from this historic company in some time. They are more flickable than the D220s. I have over 4000 miles on them so far and the thread still seems to be good.

PLUS:
1- More "sport" than the D220s.
2- Real neat threat pattern.
3- Plush, luxurious ride.
4- They grab the road and won't let go.
5- Very good life span (so far).

ISSUES:
1- Not too inspiring in the rain.
2- Avoid tar snakes on wet roads.
3- They require a few hundred miles break in period for the initial slight buzz to go away.
4- Corners a bit slow, but that is expected from ST tires.

Verdict: A good supersport-touring tire, and maybe one of the longest lasting. Not the best tire for rainy days. For more info try Avon's web site at avonmotorcycle.com.
