2004 New York Auto Show

April 7, 2004:
For those of you who love cars as much as bikes, this one's for you. I attended the 2004 New York Auto Show today; on it's first Press day.

Show Recap:

>>Merc SLK: The new SLK is stunning in every aspect. Shaped as a mini SLR, almost every piece on this car is a statement in harmony and design sophistication. The SLK in it's AMG package at 360hp in my opinion is the roadster of choice for the $50K price range.

>>Audi A6: The '05 A6, is one of the best looking sedans to come out of the Audi factory in recent memory. However the interior is a let down and reminded me of the old Volvos. They almost had a hit on their hands.

>>BMW automobiles are going through their dark ages, as their motorcycle division is experiencing a renaissance.

>>The interior of Ferrari's 575 Maranello was not only the best at the show, but it proved to achieve a certain blend of comfort, sportiness, sex appeal and pure excitement that no other manufacturer has been able to reach. The Murcielago for example, has a cold, hard and uncomfortable feel.

>>The new Lotus Elise, is a mini supercar and like most other supercars is difficult to get in and out of, or drive on metropolitan roads. It would make a lovely 3rd car or a great track vehicle. Referring back to the Maranello, surprisingly it is comfortable enough for commuting.

>>The new Corvette and Viper, look dated before they even hit the streets. I think the new generation Viper lacks the raw, muscular and powerful look of the original. They have tamed it a little too much. As for the 'vette, GM interiors need to improve a lot more. The Corvette feels like a rental, although the exterior styling is more sophisticated than the C5.

>>Ford GT40, should be kept as a track car too. I don't see how anyone with a budget of $150K, would want to drive that on the streets. Once inside there is nothing there to remind you of your investment, (the interior is Ford cheap) except for the engine of course (& styling), which is best to be experienced on the track. I don't see too many people driving supercars on Taconic Parkway at Mach 1 speeds.

>>The '05 Mustang is a winner.

>>Aston Martin DB9, in some ways is even more beautiful than Vanquish and it is hard to believe that it's about $80K cheaper. DB9 is as near perfect as you can get for this market segment. A real beauty.

>>Maserati Quatroporte. Another successful execution, worthy of the legendary Quatroporte badge--sporty, tasteful and individualistic.
